Hi All,
It is extremely rare for a Leopard Seal to be seen on Marion Island. In
fact there were two sighting on the same day.
Leopard Seals are the most dangerous seals around and there are numerous
accounts of them attaching humans as well. They are very aggressive and
will attack almost anything. Other seal and penguins are also easy
prey.
The juvenile was attached by a killer whale and can been seen to have
some serious injuries. It seems as if it has head injuries as well, as
the jaw is screw and tongue is hanging out of it mouth. We assume it is
here to either die or wait for its wounds to heal. The spotted skin is
typical of a Leopard Seal.
The other juvenile was spotted about a 5km away on another beach and
seems unharmed.
